Lesson: John 9:5 (Ages 3-5)

📖 John 9:5 – Ages 3-5

Explanation

Jesus is saying that when He is here on Earth, He shines brightly like a light in the dark. Just like a flashlight helps us see in the dark, Jesus helps us see the right way to live and love others. When Jesus says He is the light of the world, He means that He shows us how to be kind, helpful, and loving to everyone around us. So, when we follow Jesus, we can be like little lights, spreading love and kindness wherever we go, just like how a nightlight helps us feel safe and cozy in the dark.

Kid's Story

Once upon a time, there was a little firefly named Twinkle. Twinkle loved lighting up the night sky with his bright light. One day, Twinkle met a wise owl who told him about a special light in the world - Jesus!

The owl explained that just like how Twinkle brought light to the night, Jesus brought light to the world by showing love and kindness to everyone he met. Twinkle was amazed by this and wanted to be like Jesus, spreading light wherever he went.

From that day on, Twinkle made sure to shine his light not just in the night sky, but also in the hearts of those around him. He knew that as long as he was in the world, he could be a little light of Jesus, bringing joy and love to everyone he met.

And so, Twinkle became known as the little firefly who carried the light of Jesus wherever he flew.

Prayer Prompt

Dear God, thank you for being the light of the world. Help me to shine your light and love to others. Amen.

Life Application

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” This means that Jesus brings light, which is goodness, kindness, and love. Just like how the sun gives light to the earth, Jesus brings light to our lives. So, when you are at home, school, or with your friends, you can be like Jesus by being kind, helping others, and sharing love. You can be a light in the world by being a good friend, listening to others, and showing love to everyone around you.

Craft or Activity

Let's create a simple craft to help children understand the message of John 9:5. You can make a "Jesus is the Light of the World" suncatcher.

Materials needed:
- Black construction paper
- Tissue paper in various colors
- Glue
- Scissors
- Pencil
- String or yarn

Instructions:
1. Cut the black construction paper into a circle, representing the world.
2. Cut out a smaller circle in the middle of the black paper to represent Jesus as the light of the world.
3. Cut the colored tissue paper into small squares or shapes.
4. Have the child glue the tissue paper pieces around the inner circle, representing the light shining out into the world.
5. Once the glue has dried, hang the suncatcher in a window where sunlight can shine through, symbolizing Jesus as the light of the world.

As you do this craft with the child, you can talk to them about how Jesus is the light of the world, and just like how the sun shines light into our world, Jesus shines His light into our lives, guiding us and showing us the way.

Memory Verse or Rhyme

In the world, Jesus shines so bright,
He's the light, our guiding light.
Everywhere we go, He's there to show,
His love and grace for us to know.
