Lesson: Mark 10:5 (Ages 9-11)
📖 Mark 10:5 – Ages 9-11
Explanation
In this verse, Jesus is talking about a rule that God gave to people a long time ago. He said that this rule was made because people's hearts were hard. But what does it mean to have a hard heart?
Imagine your heart is like a garden. When a garden is hard, it's tough for plants to grow. In the same way, when our hearts are hard, it's hard for us to be kind, loving, and understanding. God wants our hearts to be soft, like good soil in a garden, so that love and kindness can grow in us.
Sometimes we might find it hard to forgive someone or to be patient. That's when our hearts can become a little hard. But when we ask Jesus for help, He can soften our hearts and help us be more like Him – loving, forgiving, and kind to others.
So, let's remember to ask Jesus to soften our hearts, so that His love can grow in us and we can show love to others just like He does.
Kid's Story
In a bustling town, there lived a mischievous squirrel named Sammy. One day, Sammy and his friends found a sign that said, "Do not climb the tree." Ignoring the warning, they climbed the tree and started throwing acorns at each other.
Suddenly, a wise owl named Olivia swooped down and scolded them. Sammy protested, "But why shouldn't we climb the tree?"
Olivia explained kindly, "Just like how you ignored the sign, the people in the Bible also ignored God's rules because their hearts were stubborn and didn't listen to Him."
Sammy realized his mistake and apologized. From then on, whenever he saw the sign, he remembered that sometimes rules are made to protect us, just like God's commands are meant to guide us with love.

Life Application
In Mark 10:5, Jesus is teaching us about the importance of having a soft heart filled with love and kindness. Children aged 9-11 can apply this message in their daily lives by being understanding and forgiving towards others. At home, they can show compassion and patience towards family members, especially when things don't go as planned.
In school, they can demonstrate kindness by helping a classmate in need or including someone who may be feeling left out. With friends, they can choose to forgive if someone makes a mistake and offer a second chance just as Jesus does for us.
By having a soft heart like Jesus, children can bring positivity and love into their interactions with others, making the world a better place one small act of kindness at a time.
Craft or Activity
To help children understand and remember the message of Mark 10:5, you can do a craft activity that involves creating a "heart of stone" and transforming it into a "heart of flesh."
Materials needed:
- Play-dough or modeling clay
- Markers or paint
- Small heart-shaped molds (optional)
Instructions:
1. Begin by giving each child a piece of play-dough or modeling clay. Explain to them that in the verse from Mark 10:5, Jesus is talking about how our hearts can sometimes be hard like a stone.
2. Ask the children to mold their play-dough or clay into a heart shape, representing a hard heart.
3. Once everyone has created their heart of stone, have them use markers or paint to write or draw things that can make their hearts hard, such as anger, jealousy, or selfishness.
4. After discussing the verse further, encourage the children to think about how Jesus can soften their hearts and make them more loving and compassionate.
5. Have the children reshape their heart of stone into a heart of flesh, making it softer and more pliable.
6. Finally, ask the children to decorate their transformed hearts with symbols of love, kindness, and forgiveness.
Through this hands-on activity, children can visually see the transformation from a hard heart to a softened heart, helping them understand the message of Mark 10:5 in a creative and memorable way.
