Lesson: Luke 8:5 (Ages 3-5)
📖 Luke 8:5 – Ages 3-5
Explanation
Imagine a farmer who wanted to plant seeds in his field. He walked around and scattered seeds everywhere. Some seeds fell on a hard path where people walk, and because the ground was so hard, the seeds couldn't grow. Birds came and ate those seeds up.
This story tells us that when we hear about God's love and kindness, we need to be like good soil where seeds can grow into beautiful plants. We shouldn't let worries or bad thoughts make our hearts hard like the path. Instead, we should listen to God's words and let them take root in our hearts so we can grow and be happy, just like plants growing in good soil.
Kid's Story
Once upon a time, there was a little bunny named Benny who loved to plant seeds in his garden. One sunny day, Benny decided to follow the example of the sower in the Bible and scatter seeds all around.
But oh no! Some of Benny's seeds fell on the hard path where he hopped, and before he knew it, the pesky birds swooped down and gobbled them up.
Benny was sad that his seeds didn't grow. So, he asked his wise old friend, Mr. Owl, for advice. Mr. Owl explained that just like seeds need good soil to grow, our hearts need to be open to God's love and His Word.
Benny learned that to grow strong and tall, like a sunflower reaching for the sky, he needed to listen carefully and keep his heart soft and ready to receive God's love.
Prayer Prompt
Dear God, thank you for planting seeds of love and kindness in our hearts. Help us to keep our hearts soft and open to receive your word, just like the good soil. Amen.
Discussion Questions
1. Why do you think the seeds fell on the path in the story Jesus told?
2. How do you think the birds felt when they found the seeds on the path?
3. What do you think the sower could have done differently to protect the seeds on the path?
4. Can you think of ways we can take care of good things that are given to us, like the seeds in the story?
5. How can we show kindness and help things grow, just like the sower wanted his seeds to grow?
Life Application
Just like the seeds in the story, we can think of the good things we learn about God and His love as seeds. Sometimes when we hear something good, like a Bible story or a kind word, we can be like the path where the seed fell.
When we are not paying attention or not listening carefully, these good things can easily be forgotten or taken away, just like the birds ate up the seed. So, to apply this message in our real life, we can try our best to listen and pay attention when we hear something good about God or when someone says something kind to us.
This way, these good things can take root in our hearts and grow into something beautiful, just like seeds that fall on good soil and grow into healthy plants. So, let's remember to listen carefully and pay attention to the good things we hear, just like the seeds that fall on good soil in the story.
Craft or Activity
Let's create a simple gardening activity to help children understand the message of Luke 8:5. You can provide small pots, soil, and seeds for the children. Explain that the seeds represent God's word, just like in the parable of the sower.
Ask the children to plant the seeds in the pots, making sure some seeds are scattered on a hard surface (representing the path). Encourage them to care for all the seeds by watering them and placing them in a sunny spot.
As they observe the seeds growing, explain how the seeds on the path didn't grow because they were trampled on, just like in the Bible verse. This hands-on experience will help children remember the message that we need to listen to God's word carefully and not let it be taken away.
Memory Verse or Rhyme
In the field, the sower did sow,
Seeds on the path, they couldn't grow.
Trampled by feet and birdies so high,
Let's be good soil, reach for the sky!
