Lesson: Matthew 19:6 (Ages 3-5)

📖 Matthew 19:6 – Ages 3-5

Explanation

In the Bible, Jesus tells us that when a man and a woman get married and become husband and wife, they become like one person in God's eyes. It means they are a team, working together as one big family.

Imagine if you have two puzzle pieces that fit perfectly together. When they come together, they make a beautiful picture. That's how God wants a husband and wife to be – fitting together perfectly, helping each other, and loving each other.

God puts a special love in their hearts for each other, and He wants them to stay together forever. He doesn't want anyone to try to separate them because their love is meant to be strong and lasting, just like God's love for us.

So, when a man and a woman get married, they promise to love and take care of each other always, just like how God loves and takes care of us. It's a special bond that God celebrates and blesses.

Kid's Story

Once upon a time, there were two happy little birds named Ruby and Max. They loved singing songs together and flying high in the sky. One day, a big storm came and separated them. Ruby was scared and lonely without Max by her side.

But then, with the help of their wise old friend Owl, Ruby and Max learned an important lesson. Owl explained, "Just like how God joins us all together in love, you two are meant to be together forever."

Ruby and Max realized that they were stronger and happier when they were together. They promised to always stick by each other's side, no matter what. And from then on, they flew side by side, singing their songs of love and friendship for all to hear.

Prayer Prompt

Dear God, thank you for joining two people together as one. Help us remember that when two people love each other and are married, it is a special bond that we should always cherish. Amen.

Discussion Questions

1. What does it mean when the Bible says "no longer two, but one flesh"? (Encourage the child to think about how marriage brings two people together as one family.)
2. Who do you think joins husband and wife together in marriage according to this verse? (Help the child understand that God is the one who brings people together in marriage.)
3. Why do you think it's important not to separate what God has joined together? (Encourage the child to think about the love and commitment that God wants married couples to have for each other.)
4. How can we show love and respect to our family members, just like God wants us to do for our spouse in marriage? (Help the child make connections between showing love and respect in their own family relationships.)
5. Can you think of a way to help keep families strong and together, like God wants? (Encourage the child to think of ways they can support and care for their family members.)

Life Application

This Bible verse teaches us about the importance of marriage and staying together as a family. Even though children are young, they can learn to show love and respect to their family members. They can apply this message by being kind to their parents, siblings, and others in their family. Children can also learn to solve problems peacefully and forgive each other when they make mistakes. By showing love and unity in their family, children can live out the message of Matthew 19:6 in their daily lives.

Craft or Activity

One fun activity you can do with young children to help them understand and remember the message of Matthew 19:6 is to create a "unity painting" together.

You can provide each child with a small canvas or piece of sturdy paper. Give them different colors of paint and encourage them to paint their own unique designs on their canvas. Then, once they are finished, bring all the pieces together to create one cohesive masterpiece by joining them together side by side or overlapping them.

As you do this activity, you can explain to the children that, just like their individual paintings come together to create one beautiful picture, God brings a husband and wife together to become one in marriage. Emphasize that just as it is hard to separate the different parts of the painting once they are combined, it is important for us to remember that God intends for married couples to stay together and support each other through thick and thin.

Memory Verse or Rhyme

Two become one, in God's sight,
Joined together, shining bright.
No one can tear, what God has made,
Forever together, never to fade.

Songs or Videos

A great Christian song for kids that relates to the message of Matthew 19:6 is "One" by Seeds Family Worship. This song teaches children about the importance of unity in marriage and how God joins a husband and wife together. Another wonderful song is "Two are Better Than One" by Colin Buchanan, which also emphasizes the idea of two becoming one in marriage as God intended. Both of these songs can help children understand the beautiful bond that God creates in marriage.
