Lesson: Luke 9:39 (Ages 9-11)
📖 Luke 9:39 – Ages 9-11
Explanation
In this verse, a boy is suffering a lot because of an evil spirit that troubles him. Sometimes, it makes him scream and convulse, and he even foams at the mouth. The spirit torments him, causing him great pain and fear often.
Imagine if you had a bully at school who always bothered you and made you feel scared or sad. This evil spirit is like a really mean bully, but even worse because it can hurt the boy in ways we can't see.
But the good news is that Jesus has the power to help and heal people from these kinds of troubles. Just like how a superhero comes to rescue someone in danger, Jesus can come and save us from anything that tries to harm us, even if it's something we can't see.
This verse reminds us that Jesus is strong and loving, and He can protect us from anything that wants to hurt us. It shows that we can always turn to Him for help and comfort when we're feeling scared or troubled.
Kid's Story
Once upon a time, there was a mischievous squirrel named Sammy who loved to play tricks on his forest friends. One day, Sammy played a prank on his friend, Benny the bear, that went too far. Benny got so scared that he started screaming and shaking uncontrollably, just like the boy in Luke 9:39.
Seeing Benny in distress, Sammy realized the impact of his actions and felt terrible. He stayed by Benny's side, comforting him until he calmed down. Sammy learned that his actions had consequences and that he needed to be kind and considerate to others.
From that day on, Sammy became known as the most caring and thoughtful squirrel in the forest, always looking out for his friends and making sure everyone felt safe and happy. Just like how we should treat others with love and kindness, as taught in the Bible.

Life Application
When faced with difficult or scary situations that may feel like they are tormenting them, children can remember that just like Jesus had the power to heal the boy in the Bible verse, they can turn to Jesus for help and comfort. They can pray to Jesus, ask for strength, and believe that He is with them, providing peace and calmness even in the midst of challenges. Children can also seek the support of their parents, teachers, or trusted adults whenever they feel overwhelmed, just like how the boy's father brought him to Jesus for help.
Craft or Activity
One creative activity to help children understand and remember the message of Luke 9:39 is to have them create a visual representation of the verse using art supplies. Provide the children with paper, markers, crayons, and other craft materials to illustrate the scene described in the verse. Encourage them to draw the boy who is being tormented by the spirit, foaming at the mouth and in convulsions. This hands-on activity can help children engage with the verse and visualize the story, making it more memorable and impactful for them.
Memory Verse or Rhyme
When a spirit seizes, and screams arise,
Convulsions come, and foam surprise.
Tormented violently, never at rest,
But Jesus can help, He is the best!

One Christian song that relates to the message of Luke 9:39 is "Fear Is a Liar" by Zach Williams. This song talks about how fear tries to control us, but we can trust in God's love to overcome it.
Another song you may enjoy is "You Say" by Lauren Daigle. This song reminds us that our true identity is found in what God says about us, not in the lies that the world or the enemy may try to tell us.
Both of these songs can help children understand the power of God's love and truth in overcoming fear and the challenges we face, just like in the story from Luke 9:39.
