Lesson: Luke 13:15 (Ages 9-11)

📖 Luke 13:15 – Ages 9-11

Explanation

In this Bible verse, Jesus is teaching us an important lesson about showing love and kindness to others. He is talking to some people who were being unkind and not following God's ways. Jesus called them "hypocrites," which means pretending to be good on the outside but not really being good on the inside.

Jesus gave an example to help them understand. He said that even though it was a special day of rest called the Sabbath, they would still take care of their animals by untying them from the stalls and giving them water. Jesus wanted them to see that if they could take care of their animals on the Sabbath, they should also show kindness and love to people who need help.

This verse reminds us that God wants us to be kind and loving to everyone, not just when it's convenient or easy. Just like we take care of our pets every day, we should also show love and help to others, even on special days like the Sabbath. Jesus wants us to have a heart that cares for others and shows God's love in everything we do.

Kid's Story

Once upon a time, in a village filled with colorful houses and friendly animals, there lived a little girl named Lily. Lily loved helping her parents take care of their farm animals, especially a playful goat named Daisy.

One sunny Sabbath day, Lily noticed that Daisy's bell was missing. Worried that Daisy might get lost without it, Lily wanted to find it right away. But her parents reminded her that it was the Sabbath, a day of rest and worship, and they couldn't work.

Lily remembered the verse from Luke 13:15 about untying animals to give them water on the Sabbath. She realized that helping Daisy was more important than following rules just for the sake of it. Lily untied Daisy, found her bell, and led her to water.

From that day on, Lily understood that showing kindness and taking care of others, even on special days, was what truly mattered to the Lord.

Prayer Prompt

Dear God, thank you for reminding us to show kindness and care for all your creatures, just like we take care of our animals. Help us to always remember to treat others with love and compassion. Amen.

Discussion Questions

1. Why do you think Jesus called the people "hypocrites" in this verse?
2. How do you think the people were not following God's commandments in this situation?
3. What do you think Jesus was trying to teach the people about showing love and compassion in this verse?
4. Do you think it is important to show kindness and care for animals? Why or why not?
5. How can we apply the lesson from this verse in our own lives today?

Life Application

In Luke 13:15, Jesus is teaching us about the importance of showing compassion and kindness to others, even when it may not seem convenient or fit with our usual routines.

Children aged 9-11 can apply this message in their everyday lives by being aware of how they treat others. Just like we would untie our animals to give them water on the Sabbath, we should also be willing to help and care for those around us.

At home, children can show compassion by helping with chores without being asked, comforting a sibling who is upset, or listening to their parents when they need to talk. At school, they can be kind to classmates who may be feeling left out, offer to help a friend who is struggling with schoolwork, or include someone new in their group of friends.

With friends, children can apply the message of Luke 13:15 by being understanding and forgiving, standing up for what is right, and treating others the way they would like to be treated.

By following Jesus' example of compassion and kindness, children can make a positive impact on those around them and show God's love in their daily lives.

Craft or Activity

Let's create a craft where children can make a small water trough using a shallow container, small rocks, and toy animals like oxen and donkeys. As they play with the animals, they can remember the message of the verse and discuss how Jesus valued compassion and kindness over rigid rules. It can help them understand the importance of caring for others and showing love in our actions.

Memory Verse or Rhyme

When Sabbath comes, remember this rule,
Even the animals need water, it's cool!
Help them drink, don't let them thirst,
God cares for all, that's what's first!

Songs or Videos

There is a beautiful Christian song called "Do Everything" by Steven Curtis Chapman that talks about doing everything we do for the glory of God. Another great song is "Do to Others" by Seeds Family Worship, which teaches children about treating others with kindness and love, just like Jesus taught in Luke 13:15. Both of these songs can help kids understand the importance of showing love and compassion to others, just as Jesus did.
