Lesson: Luke 3:16 (Ages 9-11)

📖 Luke 3:16 – Ages 9-11

Explanation

In this Bible verse, John the Baptist is talking about Jesus. John says that he baptizes people with water, but Jesus is even more powerful than him. John explains that he is not even worthy to do a simple task like untying Jesus' sandals because Jesus is so special.

John tells people that while he uses water to baptize them, Jesus will baptize them with something even more important - the Holy Spirit and with fire. This means that Jesus will give them a special kind of cleansing and fill them with the power of God's Spirit.

Imagine if you were playing outside and got really dirty. Washing with water would clean your body on the outside, but when Jesus cleanses us with the Holy Spirit, it's like He cleans us on the inside, making our hearts pure and our spirits bright.

Just like fire can warm us up and give light in the darkness, the fire of the Holy Spirit can bring warmth to our hearts and light up our lives with God's love and guidance. Jesus wants to fill us with His Spirit to help us live in a way that pleases God and shines brightly for others to see.

Kid's Story

In a peaceful village, there lived a curious squirrel named Sammy. Sammy loved to explore the forest and meet new friends. One sunny day, he heard about a wise old owl named Oliver who lived at the top of the tallest tree.

Excited to learn new things, Sammy climbed all the way up to meet Oliver. The wise owl welcomed Sammy and began to share stories about a special person who would bring great joy and blessings to everyone.

Sammy listened intently as Oliver explained how John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus, who would bring the Holy Spirit and fire to people's hearts. Sammy was amazed by this wonderful news and understood that Jesus was the most powerful and loving friend anyone could have.

From that day on, Sammy shared the good news with all his forest friends, spreading joy and hope wherever he went.

Prayer Prompt

Dear God, thank you for sending Jesus to baptize us with the Holy Spirit and fire. Help us to remember that Jesus is more powerful than anyone else. Amen.

Life Application

In Luke 3:16, John the Baptist is speaking about Jesus, who is more powerful than him and will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. Children aged 9-11 can apply this message by remembering that they are not the most important person in every situation. They can choose to be humble and kind, just like John knew he was not as great as Jesus. They can show respect to others, listen to them, and be willing to help without seeking recognition or praise. By doing so, they can reflect the love of Jesus and share His message of humility and service with those around them, whether at home, school, or with friends.

Craft or Activity

One creative activity you can do with the children to help them understand and remember the message of Luke 3:16 is to create a visual representation of the Holy Spirit and fire. You can provide the children with materials like construction paper, crayons or markers, cotton balls, and red and yellow tissue paper.

Ask the children to draw a dove on one piece of construction paper to represent the Holy Spirit. They can then cut out flames from the red and yellow tissue paper to represent the fire. After that, they can glue the flames to the bottom of the paper where the Holy Spirit dove is, symbolizing the baptism with the Holy Spirit and fire.

As they work on this craft, you can talk to the children about the significance of John the Baptist's message in Luke 3:16 and how Jesus is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit and fire. This hands-on activity can help reinforce the message in a fun and creative way for the children.

Memory Verse or Rhyme

John came to baptize with water, it's true,
But Jesus brings something even greater for you.
He's more powerful, mighty, and grand,
Baptizing with the Spirit and fire in His hand!

Songs or Videos

One great Christian song for kids that relates to the message of Luke 3:16 is "Spirit of the Living God" by Meredith Andrews. This song talks about the Holy Spirit's power and presence in our lives. Another wonderful song is "Holy Spirit" by Jesus Culture Kids, which also emphasizes the work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. Both songs can help kids understand the concept of the Holy Spirit's baptism and fire as mentioned in Luke 3:16.
