Lesson: Matthew 10:1 (Ages 6-8)

📖 Matthew 10:1 – Ages 6-8

Explanation

In this verse from the Bible, Jesus gathered His 12 special friends, called disciples, close to Him. He gave them the power to make unclean spirits, which are like bad and scary things, go away. It's like when you have a bad dream, and your mom or dad comes to your room, gives you a hug, and tells you everything will be okay. Jesus also gave them the ability to heal people who were sick, just like a magical hug that makes you feel better when you're not feeling well.

Jesus knew His disciples were kind and caring, so He shared His special powers with them to help others. This verse shows us that Jesus gives us the strength and ability to help those in need and to bring comfort to those who are hurting. Just like Jesus' disciples, we can be helpers and bring love and healing to those around us in our own special ways.

Kid's Story

Once upon a time, in a magical forest, there lived a brave squirrel named Sammy. Sammy loved to explore and help his friends whenever they were in trouble.

One day, Sammy heard that there were dark shadows scaring the other animals in the forest. With courage in his heart, he decided to do something about it. Sammy went to a wise owl who gave him a special wand and told him, "You have the power to drive away the shadows and bring light to our forest."

Sammy believed in the owl's words and went around casting out the shadows with his wand. To his amazement, the shadows disappeared, and the forest was filled with light and joy once again.

Just like Sammy, Jesus gave His disciples the power to cast out darkness and bring healing to those in need. We too can bring light and love to others by trusting in Jesus and sharing His love with everyone we meet.

Prayer Prompt

Dear God, thank you for giving Jesus the power to heal and cast out evil spirits. Help us to remember that with faith in Jesus, we can do amazing things too. Amen.

Discussion Questions

1. Who did Jesus call to be His special helpers in this verse?
2. What did Jesus give His disciples the power to do?
3. Can you think of a time when someone helped you when you were sick or scared?
4. How do you think Jesus’ disciples felt when He gave them the authority to heal and cast out evil spirits?
5. How can we help others like Jesus’ disciples did, even if we don’t have the same powers they did?

Life Application

This verse from Matthew 10:1 teaches us that Jesus gave authority to His disciples to cast out evil spirits and heal the sick. While we may not have the exact same authority as the disciples did, we can still apply the message in our own lives.

Children can apply the message of this verse by being kind and helping others in need. At home, they can show love and care for their family members by helping with chores or comforting a sibling who is feeling sad. At school, they can stand up against bullying and be a friend to someone who is lonely. With friends, they can share toys, listen when someone is upset, and pray for those who are sick or going through a hard time.

By showing kindness, love, and compassion to others, children can reflect the authority that Jesus gave His disciples to bring healing and help to those in need.

Craft or Activity

Let's create a fun activity to help children understand the message of Matthew 10:1. You can have the children make paper cutouts of the twelve disciples and write their names on each one. Then, give them paper cutouts of unclean spirits and diseases. Encourage the children to play out the verse by having the disciples cast out the unclean spirits and heal the diseases, just like Jesus empowered them to do. This hands-on activity will help them visualize and remember the message of the verse in a creative way.

Memory Verse or Rhyme

Jesus called His twelve friends so dear,
He gave them power, do not fear.
Over evil spirits, they have control,
Healing diseases, making hearts whole!

Songs or Videos

One great Christian song for kids that relates to the message of Matthew 10:1 is "My God is So Big" by Go Fish. This song talks about how powerful and mighty God is, emphasizing His authority over everything, including sickness and evil spirits.

Another wonderful song for kids is "Every Move I Make" by Hillsong Kids. This song speaks about how we can trust in God's power and authority in our lives, just like the disciples trusted in Jesus' authority to heal and cast out unclean spirits.
