Lesson: 1 Corinthians 10:9 (Ages 9-11)

📖 1 Corinthians 10:9 – Ages 9-11

Explanation

God doesn't want us to test Him by doing things we know are wrong or dangerous. In the Bible, some people didn't trust God and did things their own way, even though they knew it was wrong. This made God sad, and as a consequence, they faced some scary consequences, like being bitten by snakes.

Imagine if your parents told you not to play near a busy road because it's dangerous, but you decide to play there anyway, just to see what happens. That would be like testing your parents' warning, and it could put you in danger.

In the same way, when we know what God wants us to do through the Bible, we should trust Him and follow His ways, even if we don't fully understand. God loves us and wants to protect us, so we should listen to His guidance and not test His love and care for us.

Kid's Story

Once there was a curious squirrel named Sammy who lived in a beautiful garden filled with delicious nuts. One day, Sammy saw a sign that read, "Do not climb the tall tree." But Sammy wanted to show off how brave he was, so he decided to climb it anyway.

As Sammy reached the top, a strong gust of wind made him lose his balance, and he fell down, hurting his paw. Feeling scared and regretful, Sammy remembered the Bible verse that said, "Let us not put the Lord to the test."

Sammy realized that he had ignored the warning and tried to do something dangerous, just like the people who tested God and got into trouble. From that day on, Sammy listened to warnings and trusted that God's rules were there to keep him safe.

Prayer Prompt

Dear God, thank you for your love and protection. Help us to remember not to test you like the people in the Bible did. Keep us safe and guide us in your ways. Amen.

Discussion Questions

1. Why do you think it's important not to test the Lord?
2. Can you think of a time when you may have wanted to test God's power or protection?
3. What do you think it means to trust God instead of testing Him?
4. How can we show our faith in God without putting Him to the test?
5. How do you think we can learn from the mistakes of the people who tested the Lord and faced consequences?

Life Application

This Bible verse reminds us not to test God by doing things we know are wrong or dangerous, thinking He will protect us no matter what. Children can apply this by making wise choices and following rules set by parents, teachers, and authorities. For example, they can avoid risky behavior like not wearing a helmet while biking or not doing homework and expecting to pass a test miraculously. By being responsible and obedient, children can show respect for God's protection and guidance in their everyday lives.

Craft or Activity

One engaging activity to help children understand and remember the message of 1 Corinthians 10:9 is to create a "Trust Walk" obstacle course. Set up a path with various obstacles like cones, chairs, or pillows. Blindfold the child and guide them through the obstacle course, emphasizing the importance of trusting your directions without questioning or trying to take control.

After the activity, discuss how putting on the blindfold and trusting the guide is like trusting God without testing Him. Just as the Israelites faced consequences for testing God's power in the desert, we should trust God without doubting or demanding proof. This hands-on experience can help children grasp the concept of not putting the Lord to the test in a tangible and memorable way.

Memory Verse or Rhyme

Remember this verse, don’t put God to the test,
Like the people of old, who weren’t at their best.
They tempted the Lord, and snakes came to bite,
So obey and trust Him, walk in His light.

Songs or Videos

One Christian song that relates to the message of 1 Corinthians 10:9 is "The Ten Commandments Song" by Listener Kids. This song teaches children about God's commandments, including the importance of not testing the Lord. Another great song is "Trust in the Lord" by Patch the Pirate, which emphasizes putting our trust in God and not putting Him to the test. Both songs can help children understand and remember the message of 1 Corinthians 10:9 in a fun and engaging way.
