Lesson: Revelation 18:12 (Ages 6-8)

📖 Revelation 18:12 – Ages 6-8

Explanation

In this Bible verse, it talks about all the fancy and special things that people used to value a lot. Imagine a huge, beautiful treasure chest filled with shiny gold and silver coins, sparkly jewels like diamonds and rubies, and pretty pearls like the ones you see in a mermaid's necklace.

People in the past also loved wearing clothes made of the finest fabrics, like soft linen, rich purple cloth fit for a king, smooth silk that feels like a gentle hug, and bright scarlet material that stands out in a crowd.

They decorated their homes with things like sweet-smelling wood for incense, shiny ivory from elephants, and furniture made from fancy wood like mahogany. They even had tools and decorations made of strong bronze, iron, and cool marble.

But in this Bible verse, it's not just about the fancy stuff. It's a reminder that while these things can be beautiful and nice to have, they are not the most important. God wants us to focus on things that are even more precious, like kindness, love, and helping others. These treasures last forever and make our hearts shine brighter than any gold or jewels.

So, let's remember that while pretty things are fun, the most valuable treasures we can have are the ones that come from our hearts and how we treat others with love and care.

Kid's Story

Once upon a time, there was a curious squirrel named Sammy who loved collecting shiny things. Sammy would gather acorns, colorful leaves, and even the occasional shiny rock. One day, Sammy stumbled upon a treasure chest filled with gold, silver, and precious jewels.

Excited, Sammy tried to carry all the treasures back to his treehouse. But the chest was too heavy! Sammy realized that all these shiny things were beautiful, but they were also very heavy and hard to carry.

Remembering a verse from the Bible, Sammy understood that material possessions are nice to have, but true treasures are found in kindness, love, and helping others. He decided to share his shiny collection with his friends and found joy in giving and making others happy.

Just like Sammy, we can learn that the most precious treasures are not gold or jewels, but love and kindness towards others.

Prayer Prompt

Dear God, thank you for all the beautiful and special things you have given us, like gold, silver, and precious stones. Help us remember that these things are gifts from you and to be grateful for them. Amen.

Discussion Questions

1. Can you name some of the valuable things mentioned in this verse? Which of these things do you think are the most precious?
2. Why do you think people might want to have all these valuable items? Do you think these things are more important than loving God and others?
3. How do you think God wants us to use the things we have, like gold, silver, and nice clothes? Do you think we should share them with others who may not have as much?
4. What do you think is more important to God – the things we own or the way we treat others with love and kindness?
5. Can you think of a way we can show God that we love Him more than we love our possessions?

Life Application

This verse from Revelation 18:12 lists various valuable items that were part of the great wealth of Babylon. For a child, this verse can teach us about the importance of not placing too much value on material possessions. In our daily lives, we can apply this message by focusing on what truly matters - our relationships with God and others, our character, and our actions.

At home, children can learn to be grateful for what they have and not always desire more things. They can practice generosity by sharing with siblings or donating toys they no longer play with to those in need. This can help them appreciate the value of relationships over material possessions.

At school, children can apply this message by treating everyone with kindness and respect, regardless of what they have or don't have. They can be inclusive and make friends based on character and shared interests rather than material possessions.

With friends, children can learn to value each other for who they are, not for what they own. They can choose friends who appreciate them for their qualities and not for what they can give or buy.

By understanding that true wealth lies in our relationships, character, and love for others, children can apply the message of Revelation 18:12 in their daily lives and grow into kind, caring individuals.

Craft or Activity

Let's create a "Treasure Chest" craft to help children understand Revelation 18:12! Provide small boxes or containers to each child. Then, offer various materials like gold and silver foil, colorful beads for precious stones, small pearls, fabric scraps for linen, purple, silk, and scarlet, popsicle sticks for wood items, small plastic animals for ivory goods, and small toy tools for bronze, iron, and marble. Encourage children to decorate their boxes by placing these items inside to represent the different treasures mentioned in the verse. As they create their treasure chests, you can discuss the idea of spiritual treasures and how God values things like kindness, love, and faith more than material possessions.

Memory Verse or Rhyme

In the city so grand, riches abound,
Gold, silver, and jewels all around.
Fine linen, silk, and colors so bright,
Precious treasures in plain sight.

Scented wood, ivory, and marble so rare,
Expensive goods beyond compare.
Remember this verse, oh so swell,
In Revelation 18:12, the riches they tell!

Songs or Videos

One great song for kids that relates to the message of Revelation 18:12 is "Treasure" by Seeds Family Worship. This song talks about how God's Word is more precious than gold and is a treasure for us to cherish.

Another wonderful song is "Better Than Gold" by Yancy. This song reminds children that knowing Jesus is the greatest treasure they can have, far more valuable than any material possessions mentioned in Revelation 18:12.
