Lesson: Galatians 4:3 (Ages 9-11)
📖 Galatians 4:3 – Ages 9-11
Explanation
Imagine being in a big playground where there are many rules to follow. In the same way, when we were younger, we followed rules and ideas that were like being enslaved or trapped in a small playground. These rules were like the basic things we learn in school, but they didn't teach us about God's love and how He wants us to live.
Just like how we grow up and learn more things that are deeper and more important, when we become Christians, we start to understand God's love and His special ways for us. We learn that God's ways are much better than the rules of the world because they lead us to joy, peace, and love.
God's love sets us free from the old rules that kept us trapped. It's like leaving the small playground behind and entering a big, beautiful park where we can run, play, and explore with God by our side.
Kid's Story
Once upon a time, there was a curious squirrel named Sammy who lived in a big, bustling forest. Sammy loved to explore and learn new things, but he often found himself following the other squirrels and copying what they did, even if it didn't feel quite right to him.
One day, Sammy came across a group of wise owls who taught him about the importance of thinking for himself and not just following what everyone else was doing. They showed him how he had been enslaved by the ways of the forest - always doing what others said without questioning why.
Sammy realized that he had been trapped by the rudimentary philosophies of the forest, just like how we can be trapped by the ways of the world. From that day on, Sammy made a promise to himself to think independently and follow his own path, just like the lesson in Galatians 4:3 teaches us.

Life Application
This verse from Galatians 4:3 teaches us that before we knew God, we were like slaves to the ways of the world. This means we followed worldly ideas and beliefs that didn't align with God's truth.
For children aged 9-11, this verse can remind them to be careful about what they listen to and believe. They can apply this message by making sure that the things they learn at home, school, or from friends match up with what they know is true from the Bible. If they hear something that doesn't seem right or conflicts with God's word, they can talk to a trusted adult, like a parent or teacher, to help them understand and navigate those situations. By staying true to God's teachings, children can avoid being led astray by worldly philosophies and instead live according to God's truth.
Craft or Activity
One fun activity to help children understand and remember the message of Galatians 4:3 is to create a visual representation of being enslaved under worldly systems. You can have the children create a simple maze on paper, symbolizing the confusing and restrictive nature of worldly philosophies. Inside the maze, they can write down examples of worldly systems or beliefs that can hold them back from experiencing true freedom in Christ. After completing the maze, they can discuss how following God's ways leads to freedom and fulfillment. This hands-on activity can help reinforce the concept of being freed from worldly bondage through faith in Jesus.
Memory Verse or Rhyme
When we were young, we didn't know
We followed the world's ways, row by row
But now we're free, in Jesus we're found
No longer slaves, His love surrounds!
Songs or Videos
One Christian song that relates to the message of Galatians 4:3 is "This Little Light of Mine." This song encourages children to let their light shine for Jesus and not be enslaved by the ways of the world. Another song is "I'm in the Lord's Army," which reminds children that they are soldiers for Christ and should not be bound by worldly thinking. Both songs convey the message of being free from the world's ways and living for Jesus.
