Lesson: 1 Corinthians 8:1 (Ages 9-11)

📖 1 Corinthians 8:1 – Ages 9-11

Explanation

In this Bible verse, God is teaching us an important lesson about the difference between knowledge and love. Knowledge is knowing things, like facts or information, and it can make us feel smart or important. But if we only focus on knowledge and show off what we know, it can make us proud, which means thinking we are better than others.

On the other hand, love is all about caring for others, being kind, and helping them. Love is like a warm hug or a friendly smile that makes people feel happy and supported. Instead of making us feel proud, love helps us build others up, which means encouraging them and making them feel good about themselves.

So, God is telling us that it's good to know things, but it's even more important to show love to others. When we choose to be loving and kind, we can make a positive difference in people's lives and bring them closer to God. Let's remember to use our knowledge to help others and to spread love wherever we go.

Kid's Story

Once upon a time in a forest, there was a wise old owl named Oliver who loved to show off how much he knew. One day, a little squirrel named Sammy found some berries near an old idol. Sammy knew that the berries were safe to eat, but Oliver warned him that they had been offered to the idol and might be dangerous.

Sammy didn't understand why Oliver was so proud of his knowledge, but he decided to listen. As they watched, a hungry rabbit came by and ate the berries without knowing about the idol. Sammy saw the rabbit get sick, and Oliver realized that knowledge alone wasn't enough.

He explained to Sammy that it's important to use knowledge to help others, not to show off. Love and kindness are what truly matter. From then on, Sammy and Oliver worked together to help their forest friends, always remembering that love builds people up.

Prayer Prompt

Dear God, thank you for teaching us through Your Word. Help us to remember that having knowledge is good, but it's even better to show love to others. Please guide us to build each other up with love, just as You do for us. Amen.

Discussion Questions

1. What does it mean to be proud because of knowledge? How can being proud affect our relationships with others?
2. How does showing love for others help to build them up? Can you think of a time when someone showed you love and it made you feel good?
3. Why do you think it's important to think about how our actions might affect others, even if we know we are allowed to do something?
4. How can we use our knowledge in a way that shows love and respect for others, instead of making us feel proud?
5. Can you think of a way you can show love to someone today, even if it means setting aside something you know you can do?

Life Application

In 1 Corinthians 8:1, the Bible is teaching us that having knowledge is good, but it’s important to remember that love is even more important. This means that even if we know a lot of things, we should not let it make us feel better than others. Instead, we should use our knowledge to help and encourage others.

So, for kids aged 9-11, this verse can be applied in their everyday life. For example, at home, if you know how to do something better than your siblings or parents, instead of acting proud, you can show love by helping them and being patient with them.

At school, if you understand a lesson that some of your classmates are struggling with, you can offer to help them learn instead of showing off or making them feel bad.

With friends, if you have a talent or skill that others may not have, use it to encourage them and build them up instead of bragging or making them feel small.

Remember, the most important thing is to show love to others, no matter how much knowledge or skills we may have.

Craft or Activity

Let's make a "Building Up with Love" tower craft!

Materials needed:
- Building blocks or Legos
- Markers or stickers
- Paper
- Scissors
- Glue

Instructions:
1. Write or draw "Love" on one side of each building block or Lego piece.
2. Write or draw things that make people proud (like knowledge, achievements, etc.) on the other side of the blocks.
3. Cut small squares of paper and write or draw examples of how love can build people up on them (kind words, helping others, being patient, etc.).
4. Use the glue to stick the paper squares on the blocks with "Love" facing up.
5. Encourage the child to build a tower using the blocks with love on top, showing how love should be the foundation that builds people up.

As you build the tower, talk about how knowledge can make people proud, but it is love that truly helps others and makes a difference. Just like the tower stands strong with love as its foundation, our relationships and actions are stronger when built on love.

Memory Verse or Rhyme

In God's eyes, love is key,
Knowledge alone can make us haughty.
So let's choose love, it's what we need,
To build others up, in word and deed!

Songs or Videos

One great Christian song for kids that relates to the message of 1 Corinthians 8:1 is "Love Is" by The Rizers. This song teaches kids about the importance of love over knowledge and how love builds others up. Another wonderful song is "The Fruit of the Spirit" by Go Fish. This song can help kids understand how love is one of the fruits of the Spirit and how it is more important than knowledge that can make us proud. Both of these songs can be found on YouTube or streaming platforms for kids to enjoy and learn from.
