Lesson: Hebrews 9:13 (Ages 9-11)

📖 Hebrews 9:13 – Ages 9-11

Explanation

In Hebrews 9:13, the Bible talks about how people in the past used the blood of animals like goats and bulls, and even the ashes of a young cow, to make themselves clean on the outside when they were doing special ceremonies. They believed that by doing this, they would be made pure and acceptable to God.

But the verse also teaches us something very important. It tells us that these things only made them clean on the outside, like washing your hands or taking a bath makes you clean on the outside. However, God wants more than just our outsides to be clean. He wants our hearts to be clean and pure too.

This verse helps us understand that even though those rituals with animals were important in the past, they couldn't truly make people's hearts clean. It's like trying to clean a dirty window with just water on the outside but forgetting to clean the dirt on the inside.

That's why Jesus is so special. He came to earth to offer His own blood, not from animals, but His very own blood, to make us truly clean on the inside. His sacrifice on the cross cleanses our hearts from all the wrong things we've done, and He makes us pure and acceptable to God, both on the outside and the inside.

So, remember, it's not just about looking good on the outside. God cares about our hearts too, and Jesus is the one who can truly make us clean and pure inside and out.

Kid's Story

Once upon a time, there was a friendly bunny named Benny who loved hopping around the farm. One day, Benny saw the farmer performing a special ceremony with goats and bulls to make things clean. Curious, Benny asked what was happening.

The farmer explained that in the old days, people used the blood of goats and bulls to make things clean on the outside. Benny was puzzled, so the farmer told him about a new way to be clean on the inside too.

He said, "Just like the animals' blood made things clean before, Jesus' blood makes us clean on the inside forever."

Benny realized that being clean on the outside is good, but being clean on the inside is even better. From that day on, Benny hopped around spreading the good news of Jesus' love and how His blood makes us clean inside and out.

Prayer Prompt

Dear God, thank you for loving us so much that you made a way for us to be clean and close to you. Just like how in the past, the blood of animals made people clean on the outside, but now, Jesus' blood makes us clean on the inside. Help us to remember this and to be thankful for Jesus' sacrifice. Amen.

Discussion Questions

1. What do you think the Bible means by saying that the blood of animals can make people "outwardly clean"?
2. Why do you think it was important for people in the Old Testament to follow these ceremonial rules about being clean?
3. How do you think Jesus' sacrifice is different from the sacrifices of goats, bulls, and cows mentioned in this verse?
4. What do you think it means to be truly clean on the inside, not just on the outside?
5. How can we show thankfulness to Jesus for making us clean on the inside through His sacrifice?

Life Application

This verse from Hebrews 9:13 is talking about how in the Old Testament, the blood of animals was used to make people clean on the outside so they could worship God. But now, Jesus' blood cleans us on the inside, making us right with God.

Children aged 9-11 can apply this message in their daily lives by understanding that Jesus' sacrifice is what truly cleanses and forgives our sins. They can remember that even when they make mistakes or feel unclean, they can always rely on Jesus to forgive them and make them clean on the inside.

At home, children can practice forgiveness and kindness towards their family members, just as Jesus forgives them. At school, they can show love and compassion to their friends, knowing that Jesus loves them unconditionally. With friends, they can share the good news of Jesus' sacrifice and how he can make us clean on the inside.

By living out the message of Hebrews 9:13 in their everyday interactions, children can grow in their faith and reflect Jesus' love to those around them.

Craft or Activity

One fun activity to help children understand Hebrews 9:13 could be a visual representation using different colors of play dough.

You can have the children create a scene with three sections: one with red play dough representing the blood of goats and bulls, another with brown play dough symbolizing the ashes of a young cow, and a third section with white play dough representing being outwardly clean.

As they mold and shape the play dough, you can explain to them how in the past, people used the blood of animals and ashes to make them look clean on the outside. But it was only temporary and couldn’t make their hearts clean on the inside.

Then you can introduce Jesus as the ultimate sacrifice whose blood makes us clean on the inside and outside forever. Encourage the children to mix the colors together to show how Jesus’ sacrifice covers all our sins completely. This hands-on activity can help reinforce the concept of Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice in a tangible and memorable way for the children.

Memory Verse or Rhyme

In the Old Testament, sacrifices were made,
To make people clean, their sins would fade.
But in Hebrews 9:13, we learn something new,
Jesus' blood cleanses us, making us brand new!

Songs or Videos

One Christian song for kids that relates to the message of Hebrews 9:13 is "Nothing But the Blood of Jesus." This song talks about how the blood of Jesus cleanses us from sin, just as Hebrews 9:13 mentions the cleansing power of sacrifices. Another song is "The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power," which emphasizes the eternal and powerful nature of Jesus' blood in washing away our sins. Both songs can help children understand the significance of Jesus' sacrifice in a simple and meaningful way.
