Lesson: John 8:5 (Ages 6-8)

📖 John 8:5 – Ages 6-8

Explanation

In this Bible verse, some people asked Jesus what they should do with a woman who did something wrong. They mentioned that the law of Moses said she should be stoned, which means people would throw stones at her as a punishment.

But do you know what Jesus did? Instead of agreeing with them, He showed kindness and forgiveness. He said that anyone who had never done anything wrong could throw the first stone. Slowly, the people who wanted to punish the woman left because they knew they were not perfect either.

Jesus showed us that we should be understanding and not quick to judge others. Just like how we all make mistakes sometimes, Jesus teaches us to forgive others and show them love, just as He does for us.

So, let's remember to be kind and forgiving, just like Jesus, and always treat others with love and understanding.

Kid's Story

Once upon a time, in a bustling village, there was a curious squirrel named Sammy. Sammy loved to gather nuts and explore new places. One day, while scurrying through the village square, Sammy heard a group of animals talking about a squirrel who had made a mistake.

Curious, Sammy approached and saw the animals holding acorns in their paws, ready to throw them at the squirrel. Remembering the words of John 8:5, Sammy bravely stood in front of the scared squirrel and said, "In the Law, we are told to be kind and forgiving. Let's not throw stones, but instead, help our friend learn from their mistake."

The animals dropped their acorns and embraced the squirrel with forgiveness and understanding. From that day on, Sammy learned that showing mercy and kindness is always the right choice.

Prayer Prompt

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your love and forgiveness. Help us to remember that Jesus showed mercy and kindness to others, and that we should do the same. Amen.

Discussion Questions

1. Why do you think the people wanted to stone the woman in the story?
2. How do you think the woman felt when the people wanted to stone her?
3. What do you think Jesus meant when He said, "So what do You say?"
4. How do you think the woman felt when Jesus showed her kindness and forgiveness?
5. How can we show kindness and forgiveness to others, like Jesus did in this story?

Life Application

In this verse, some people wanted to punish a woman who had made a mistake. But Jesus showed love and forgiveness instead of judgment.

Children can apply this message in their lives by being kind and forgiving to others when they make mistakes. At home, they can choose to forgive a sibling who has done something wrong instead of getting angry. In school, they can be a friend to someone who is being left out or teased. With friends, they can choose to forgive and give second chances when someone hurts their feelings. By showing love and forgiveness like Jesus did, children can spread kindness and make the world a better place.

Craft or Activity

Let's create a hands-on activity to help children understand and remember the message of John 8:5!

You can set up a small "stone" painting station. Provide smooth rocks or pebbles, paint, and brushes. Encourage the children to paint colorful designs or write words like "Love," "Forgiveness," or "Jesus" on the rocks.

As they paint, talk to them about the story behind John 8:5. Explain that the religious leaders wanted to stone a woman who had made a mistake, but Jesus showed love and forgiveness instead. Encourage the children to think about how they can show love and forgiveness to others in their own lives.

This craft will help them remember the important message of showing love and forgiveness, just like Jesus did in this story.

Memory Verse or Rhyme

In the Law, Moses said to stone,
But Jesus' love He clearly shown.
He forgave her sins that day,
Showing us a better way!
So let's be kind in all we do,
Just like Jesus, me and you!

Songs or Videos

In this verse, we see the story of the woman caught in adultery and brought to Jesus by the scribes and Pharisees. Jesus responded with compassion and forgiveness, challenging them to examine their own hearts before judging others. One great Christian song for kids that aligns with this message is "Forgiveness" by Matthew West. This song emphasizes the importance of showing love and forgiveness to others, just as Jesus did. Another wonderful song is "Jesus Loves Me" which teaches children about the unconditional love and forgiveness that Jesus offers to all.
