Lesson: Luke 14:34 (Ages 3-5)

📖 Luke 14:34 – Ages 3-5

Explanation

Salt is a special thing that makes food taste yummy. Just like how we need salt to make our food tasty, in the Bible, Jesus said that we are like salt too! He said that if salt doesn't taste like salt anymore, it's not very helpful, right? So, Jesus wants us to be like good, tasty salt in the world. This means we should try to be kind, helpful, and make the world a better place. Just like how salt makes food better, we can make the world better by being kind to others and showing God's love. So, let's remember to be like good, tasty salt and spread love wherever we go!

Kid's Story

Once upon a time, there was a little squirrel named Sammy who loved to gather nuts. One day, Sammy found a special bag of magical salt that made his nuts taste extra delicious. He sprinkled a little bit of the magical salt on each nut before eating them.

But one day, Sammy accidentally spilled the magical salt all over the ground. He was sad because now he couldn’t make his nuts taste as yummy as before. He remembered the wise words he once heard, "But if salt loses its purpose, its saltiness, how will it be made useful again?"

Sammy realized that he needed to be careful with the magical salt and use it wisely. From that day on, he made sure to sprinkle just the right amount on his nuts, so they tasted yummy and he didn’t waste the magical salt. Sammy learned that even a little bit of something special can make a big difference!

Prayer Prompt

Dear God, thank you for making us special, just like salt. Help us remember to always be true to who You made us to be, so we can be useful and share Your love with others. Amen.

Discussion Questions

1. Why do you think salt is important?
2. How can we make sure we are being useful like salt?
3. What do you think Jesus wants us to learn from this verse?
4. Can you think of a way to show love and kindness to others, like how salt adds flavor?
5. How can we remember to be like salt and keep our purpose in mind every day?

Life Application

Just like salt adds flavor and preserves food, we can remember that we are like salt in the world. This verse reminds us that we have an important purpose given by God. Children can apply this message by being kind, helpful, and loving towards others at home, school, and with friends. By sharing God’s love and being a positive influence, they can show others the goodness of God and fulfill their purpose just like salt does.

Craft or Activity

Let's create a "Salt of the Earth" craft! You can have the child decorate a small jar or container with stickers or markers. Then, fill the container with salt and explain to them that, just like salt adds flavor and preserves food, we as Christians are called to add goodness and love to the world. Encourage them to sprinkle a little bit of salt on a piece of food to see how it changes the taste, and relate that to how we can make a positive impact on others by living out our faith. This hands-on activity will help them understand the importance of being the "salt of the earth" as mentioned in Luke 14:34.

Memory Verse or Rhyme

Salt adds flavor, it's so neat,
In Luke 14:34, Jesus did repeat,
If salt loses its taste, oh what a shame,
It can't be salty, it's not the same!

Songs or Videos

One great Christian song for kids that relates to the message of Luke 14:34 is "This Little Light of Mine." The song encourages children to let their light shine before others so that they may see their good deeds and glorify their Father in heaven. Another wonderful song is "Salt and Light" by Lauren Daigle, which also emphasizes the importance of being the salt of the earth and the light of the world as taught in the Bible verse you mentioned. Both of these songs creatively convey the message of being a positive influence and shining brightly for God.
