Lesson: Luke 22:42 (Ages 6-8)
📖 Luke 22:42 – Ages 6-8
Explanation
In Luke 22:42, Jesus is talking to God, His father, and He's asking Him if there's a way to not have to go through something hard. He says, "Father, if You are willing, take this cup away from Me."
Imagine if you had to eat vegetables that you really don't like. You might ask your mom or dad if you could have something else for dinner instead, right? That's kind of like what Jesus is doing here. He's asking God if there's a way to avoid something difficult that He knows is coming.
But then Jesus says something very important. He says, "yet not My will, but Yours be done." This means that even though He doesn't want to go through the hard thing, He trusts God's plan and wants to do what God knows is best.
So, this Bible verse teaches us about trusting God even when things are tough. Just like Jesus, we can pray and ask God for help, but we should also remember to trust His plans for us because He knows what's best for us, even when we don't understand.
Kid's Story
Once upon a time, there was a little squirrel named Sammy who loved collecting acorns in the forest. One day, a big storm came and all the acorns were washed away. Sammy was very sad and asked God to make the storm stop.
Just like in Luke 22:42, Sammy said, "God, please stop the storm and bring back my acorns." But then, Sammy remembered Jesus' words, "Not my will, but Yours be done."
Sammy realized that even though he wanted the storm to go away, he trusted God's plan. He decided to help his animal friends find new food instead of worrying about his lost acorns. And do you know what happened? The next day, the forest was filled with even more acorns than before!
Just like Sammy, we can trust God's plan even when things don't go our way.

Life Application
When Jesus said this prayer in Luke 22:42, He was showing us how important it is to trust in God's plan, even when it's hard. Kids can apply this message in their lives by remembering to trust God's plans, even when things are tough. At home, they can pray to God for help and guidance in making decisions. At school, they can remember to be kind and loving to others, even when it's not easy. With friends, they can show God's love by forgiving and being a good friend. Just like Jesus, they can pray for God's will to be done in their lives, trusting that He knows what's best for them.
Craft or Activity
One fun activity to help children understand and remember the message of Luke 22:42 is to create a "Prayer Cup." You can provide each child with a paper cup or a small container and some markers or stickers to decorate it. Encourage them to write or draw their own prayers on the cup, just like how Jesus prayed to God in the verse.
After decorating their prayer cups, have a discussion about the verse and what it means to pray for God's will to be done. Encourage the children to think about times when they may have wanted something different from what God had planned for them. They can then write or draw a prayer on their cup, asking God to help them trust His plan just like Jesus did.
This hands-on activity can help children engage with the verse in a meaningful way and serve as a visual reminder of the importance of praying for God's will to be done in their lives.
Memory Verse or Rhyme
When things get tough, remember this verse,
Jesus prayed to God, putting Him first.
He asked for His burden to be taken away,
But accepted God's will without delay.
Songs or Videos
A great Christian song for kids that relates to the message of Luke 22:42 is "Thy Will" by Hillary Scott & The Scott Family. This song beautifully conveys the message of surrendering to God's will, just as Jesus did in the Garden of Gethsemane. Another wonderful song is "Trust in You" by Lauren Daigle, which encourages us to trust God's plan even when things are difficult, just like Jesus did before His crucifixion. Both of these songs can help children understand the importance of submitting to God's will in their lives.
