Lesson: Mark 14:5 (Ages 3-5)

📖 Mark 14:5 – Ages 3-5

Explanation

In this verse, a woman poured expensive perfume on Jesus' feet, and some people thought it was a waste. They said the perfume could have been sold for a lot of money and given to the poor.

But Jesus explained that what the woman did was a beautiful and special thing. It showed her love and respect for Him. Jesus wanted people to understand that sometimes showing love and honor to God is more important than money or things.

Imagine if you had a special toy or a favorite snack. You might choose to share it with someone you love because you want to make them happy. Just like the woman shared her perfume with Jesus out of love.

Jesus wants us to show love and kindness to others, even if it means giving up something valuable. That's because loving God and loving others are the most important things we can do.

Kid's Story

Once upon a time, there was a kind little bunny named Lily. Lily loved to collect shiny marbles and keep them in her burrow. One day, a hungry squirrel friend came to Lily, asking for food. Lily remembered the words from the Bible, "It could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor." Lily knew she could help her friend.

Instead of hoarding her marbles, Lily decided to give them to the squirrel. The other bunnies scolded Lily, saying she was foolish to give away something so precious. But Lily felt happy knowing she helped her friend in need.

Just like Lily, we can learn that helping others is more important than keeping things for ourselves. Being kind and generous brings joy to our hearts, just like it did for Lily and her friend.

Life Application

In this verse, we learn about a woman who poured expensive perfume on Jesus, and some people criticized her for it, saying she could have sold it and given the money to the poor.

For young children, this verse teaches us about being kind and generous to others. Even though the woman's gift seemed extravagant, she showed her love and devotion to Jesus by giving her best.

Children can apply this message in their own lives by being generous and caring towards others. They can share their toys with friends, help their family members with chores, or even donate clothes or toys to those in need. This verse reminds us that it's important to show love and kindness to others, just like the woman did for Jesus.

Craft or Activity

One fun activity to help children understand the message of Mark 14:5 is to create a pretend market or store setting. Provide play money or pretend coins for the children to use. Encourage them to “sell” items (toys, play food, etc.) to each other at different prices.

After some time, introduce a special item (like a shiny toy or a favorite object) that is “worth” three hundred pretend coins. Discuss how this item is very valuable, just like the ointment in the Bible story.

Then, explain the verse in simple terms, that the woman could have sold the ointment for a lot of money but chose to use it to show love and honor to Jesus. Encourage the children to think about ways they can show love and kindness to others, just like the woman in the story.

This hands-on activity allows children to engage with the concept of value, generosity, and kindness in a tangible way that is easy for them to understand and remember.

Memory Verse or Rhyme

When Mary poured perfume rare,
Some thought it wasn't fair.
"It could've helped the poor," they said,
But Jesus praised her instead!

Songs or Videos

One great Christian song for kids that relates to the message of Mark 14:5 is "Do Everything" by Steven Curtis Chapman. This song encourages children to do everything for the glory of God, including using their resources to help others in need, just like the woman who anointed Jesus with expensive perfume. Another song that conveys this message is "My Lighthouse" by Rend Collective. This uplifting song reminds children that Jesus is their light and guide, encouraging them to follow His example of sacrificial love and generosity towards others.
