Lesson: Mark 15:5 (Ages 9-11)

📖 Mark 15:5 – Ages 9-11

Explanation

When Pilate asked Jesus questions, Jesus chose not to answer. This made Pilate very surprised!

Imagine you're playing a game, and someone tries to make you feel mad or upset with their words. Instead of getting upset, you stay calm and quiet, just like how Jesus did with Pilate. Jesus showed us that sometimes it's better not to argue or fight back when people are being mean or trying to make us angry.

Jesus wanted to teach us that staying calm and peaceful is important, even when others are not kind to us. It's like keeping a gentle heart, just as Jesus did, even when things are difficult. Jesus's quiet strength can help us be brave and loving in tough situations too.

Kid's Story

Once upon a time, there was a curious squirrel named Sammy. One day, while playing in the forest, Sammy overheard two birds arguing loudly. Instead of getting involved, Sammy remembered the verse Mark 15:5, "But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed."

Sammy decided to stay silent and observe. The birds soon realized they were being silly and stopped arguing. They apologized to each other and flew away happily.

Later, Sammy's friends asked him why he didn't join in the argument. Sammy explained that sometimes staying quiet can help others see the right way. Just like Jesus did.

From then on, Sammy became known as the wise squirrel who knew when to speak and when to stay silent. And all the animals in the forest admired him for his wisdom.

Prayer Prompt

Dear God, thank you for Jesus, who showed us how to stay calm and strong even when others are not kind to us. Help us to remember His example and to trust in Your love, even when we face difficult situations. Amen.

Discussion Questions

1. Why do you think Jesus chose not to defend himself when Pilate questioned him?
2. How do you think Jesus felt when Pilate was amazed by his silence?
3. Can you think of a time when you chose not to argue or defend yourself, like Jesus did?
4. What do you think we can learn from Jesus staying quiet in this situation?
5. How can we follow Jesus' example of responding with patience and grace when faced with difficult situations?

Life Application

When faced with a situation where someone is being mean or trying to provoke a response, a child can remember how Jesus remained calm and did not respond in anger. They can choose to respond with kindness and patience, just like Jesus did. This can help them handle conflicts peacefully, show self-control, and set a positive example for others.

Craft or Activity

Let's create a craft called "Silent Jesus Portrait." Provide each child with a small canvas or sturdy paper and art supplies like paints or markers. Encourage them to draw or paint a portrait of Jesus in a peaceful and calm manner, emphasizing his silence during difficult times. Discuss the importance of staying calm and composed like Jesus did, even when faced with challenges. This craft will help children visualize and remember the message of Jesus' silent strength in the face of adversity as described in Mark 15:5.

Memory Verse or Rhyme

When Pilate asked, Jesus stayed quiet and calm,
His silence showed strength, like a soothing balm.
No need for words, His actions spoke loud,
In every situation, He stood tall and proud.

Songs or Videos

One great Christian song for kids that relates to the message of Mark 15:5 is "Jesus, Strong and Kind" by CityAlight. This song emphasizes Jesus' strength and kindness, even in the face of silence like we see in this verse. Another wonderful song is "My Lighthouse" by Rend Collective, which reminds us that Jesus is our constant light and guide, just as He was for Pilate in this moment. Both songs help children understand Jesus' character and how we can trust Him in all situations.
