Lesson: Matthew 11:8 (Ages 3-5)
📖 Matthew 11:8 – Ages 3-5
Explanation
In this Bible verse, Jesus is talking about a man named John the Baptist. John was a special person who lived in the desert and wore clothes made from camel hair. He didn't wear fancy, soft clothes like people in palaces wore.
Jesus is asking people why they went to see John. He's saying, "Did you go to see a man wearing fancy clothes like a king?" But John wasn't like that. Even though he didn't have fancy clothes or live in a palace, he was a very important person sent by God to tell others about Jesus.
So, even though John didn't have fancy things, he was still very special and loved by God. It's a reminder that what's on the outside, like fancy clothes or living in a palace, isn't as important as being kind, loving, and following God's ways.
Kid's Story
Once there was a little squirrel named Sammy who loved to explore the forest. One day, Sammy saw a shiny butterfly and decided to follow it. Along the way, Sammy met a fancy peacock wearing soft, colorful feathers.
Curious, Sammy asked, "Why do you wear such soft, pretty clothes?" The peacock proudly replied, "I wear these to show off in the forest!"
Later, Sammy met a wise owl who wore simple, brown feathers. The owl explained, "I don't need fancy clothes to be special. True beauty is in being kind and helpful to others."
Sammy realized that it's not the fancy clothes that make someone great, but their kindness and love for others. From then on, Sammy focused on being a helpful friend to all the animals in the forest.
Prayer Prompt
Dear God, thank you for showing us that true greatness is not about fancy clothes or living in palaces. Help us to see that what matters most is having a kind and loving heart. Amen.

Life Application
This verse is teaching us that true greatness is not found in fancy clothes or material possessions. Children can apply this message by focusing on being kind, loving, and helpful to others instead of trying to impress people with things like expensive clothes or toys. Encourage children to show kindness to their family, friends, and classmates through their words and actions, and to remember that true beauty comes from a loving heart, not from outward appearances.
Craft or Activity
Let's create a "Soft vs. Strong" activity to help children understand Matthew 11:8!
You can prepare two boxes labeled "Soft" and "Strong." Fill the "Soft" box with items like cotton balls, feathers, and soft fabric. In the "Strong" box, include items like rocks, toy swords, and toy shields.
Explain to the children that just like how some things are soft and some are strong, the Bible verse is teaching us that John the Baptist was a strong and bold messenger of God, not someone who lived in luxury. Have the children take turns picking items from each box and talking about why they think it belongs in the "Soft" or "Strong" category.
This hands-on activity will help children grasp the concept of strength and humility as they reflect on the message of the verse.
Memory Verse or Rhyme
When John the Baptist came to town,
He wore clothes that were rough and brown.
To show he was humble, not dressed in silk,
Like kings in palaces, his clothes were not soft as milk!
Songs or Videos
One great Christian song for kids that relates to the message of Matthew 11:8 is "The Wise Man Built His House Upon the Rock." This song teaches children the importance of building their lives on the solid foundation of God's Word.
Another wonderful song is "This Little Light of Mine." This song reminds children to let their light shine before others, just as Jesus instructs in the Bible. It encourages kids to be a positive influence in the world around them.
