1 They came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gerasenes.

2 As soon as Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an unclean spirit came out from the tombs and met Him.

3 This man lived among the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain.

4 Though he had often been bound with shackles and chains, he had torn the chains apart and broken the shackles into pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him.

5 Night and day, among the tombs and on the mountains, he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones.

6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and bowed down before Him.

7 And crying out with a loud voice, he said, "What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You by God, don't torment me!"

8 For Jesus had said to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!"

9 Then Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "My name is Legion," he answered, "because we are many."

10 And he begged Jesus repeatedly not to send them out of the region.

11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.

12 The demons begged Him, "Send us into the pigs, so that we may enter them."

13 Jesus gave them permission. The unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs, and the herd, about two thousand of them, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned.

14 The herdsmen ran off and reported it in the town and the countryside, and people came to see what had happened.

15 They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been possessed by many demons sitting there, dressed and in his right mind, and they were afraid.

16 Those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and also about the pigs.

17 Then they began to beg Jesus to leave their region.

18 As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by demons begged to go with Him.

19 But Jesus did not let him. Instead, He said, "Go home to your people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you."

20 So the man went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone was amazed.

21 When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him while He was by the sea.

22 Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came. When he saw Jesus, he fell at His feet

23 and begged Him earnestly, "My little daughter is dying. Come and lay Your hands on her so that she will be saved and live."

24 So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed and pressed in around Him.

25 Now a woman suffering from bleeding for twelve years,

26 she had endured much under many doctors, had spent all she had, and was not helped at all. In fact, she had become worse.

27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind Him in the crowd and touched His cloak,

28 because she had said, "If I just touch His clothes, I will be healed."

29 Immediately her bleeding stopped, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her suffering.

30 At once Jesus realized in Himself that power had gone out from Him. He turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched My clothes?"

31 His disciples said to Him, "You see the crowd pressing against You, and yet You ask, 'Who touched Me?'"

32 But He was looking around to see who had done it.

33 The woman, knowing what had happened to her, came with fear and trembling, fell down before Him, and told Him the whole truth.

34 He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace, and be freed from your suffering."

35 While He was still speaking, people came from the synagogue leader's house and said, "Your daughter has died. Why bother the Teacher anymore?"

36 But when Jesus overheard what was said, He told the synagogue leader, "Don't be afraid. Only believe."

37 He did not let anyone accompany Him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James.

38 They came to the house of the synagogue leader, and He saw the commotion, people crying loudly and wailing.

39 He went in and said to them, "Why are you making such a scene and crying? The child is not dead but sleeping."

40 They laughed at Him. But He put them all outside. He took the child's father and mother, and those who were with Him, and went in where the child was.

41 Then He took the child by the hand and said to her, "Talitha koum!" (which is translated, "Little girl, I say to you, get up").

42 Immediately the girl got up and began to walk (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely amazed.

43 He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.
