When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.

Suddenly, a sound like a violent rushing wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.

Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire, dividing and coming to rest on each one of them.

They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews staying in Jerusalem from every nation under heaven.

When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in confusion because each one heard them speaking in his own language.

They were completely amazed and said, "Aren't all these who are speaking Galileans?

How is it then that each of us hears them in our own native language?

Parthians, Medes, Elamites; people living in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,

Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome,

both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!"

They were all amazed and confused, saying to one another, "What does this mean?"

But others mocked them and said, "They've had too much wine."

Then Peter stood up with the eleven, raised his voice, and addressed the crowd: "Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and pay attention to my words.

These people are not drunk, as you suppose, it's only nine in the morning.

On the contrary, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

In the last days, God says, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

Even on My male and female servants in those days I will pour out My Spirit, and they will prophesy.

I will show wonders in the sky above and signs on the earth below: blood, fire, and billows of smoke.

The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes.

And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'

Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus of Nazareth was a man confirmed by God to you with miracles, wonders, and signs that God did among you through Him, just as you yourselves know.

Though He was handed over according to God's determined plan and foreknowledge, you executed Him by nailing Him to a cross through the hands of lawless men.

But God raised Him up, freeing Him from the agony of death, because it was not possible for death to hold Him.

For David says of Him: 'I saw the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest in confident expectation,

because You will not abandon my soul to the grave or let Your Holy One see decay.

You have made known to me the paths of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence.'

Brothers and sisters, I can confidently tell you that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here with us to this day.

Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had promised him with an oath that He would set one of his descendants on his throne.

Seeing what was ahead, he spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that He was not abandoned to the grave, nor did His body see decay.

God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it.

Therefore, since He has been exalted to the right hand of God and received the promised Holy Spirit from the Father, He has poured out what you now see and hear.

For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he says: 'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at My right hand

until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet."'

Therefore, let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ."

When they heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brothers, what should we do?"

Peter replied, "Turn from your former ways and be baptized, each one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself."

With many other words he gave them warning and kept urging them, saying, "Be saved from this corrupt generation!"

So those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand people were added to their number that day.

They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.

A sense of awe came over everyone, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.

All the believers were together and had everything in common.

They sold their possessions and property and distributed the proceeds to anyone who had need.

Every day they met together in the temple courts, broke bread in their homes, and ate with joyful and sincere hearts,

praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number daily those who were being saved.
