After the uproar had ended, Paul sent for the disciples. After encouraging them and saying goodbye, he left for Macedonia.

He traveled through those regions and offered many words of encouragement to the believers. Then he came to Greece,

where he stayed for three months. When a plot was made against him by the Jews as he was about to set sail for Syria, he decided to return through Macedonia.

He was accompanied by Sopater son of Pyrrhus from Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe, Timothy, and also Tychicus and Trophimus from Asia.

These men went on ahead and waited for us in Troas,

but we sailed away from Philippi after the Festival of Unleavened Bread, and in five days we came to them at Troas, where we stayed seven days.

On the first day of the week, we gathered together to break bread. Paul spoke to the people, and because he intended to leave the next day, he kept speaking until midnight.

There were many lamps in the upstairs room where we were gathered.

A young man named Eutychus, who was sitting in the window, began to sink into a deep sleep as Paul continued to speak. Overcome by sleep, he fell from the third story, and when they picked him up, he was dead.

But Paul went down, leaned over him, embraced him, and said, "Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him."

After going back upstairs, he broke bread and ate. He continued speaking until dawn, and then he left.

They took the boy home alive and were greatly comforted.

We went on ahead to the ship and sailed to Assos, intending to take Paul on board there. He had made this arrangement because he planned to go on foot.

When he met us at Assos, we took him on board and went to Mitylene.

We sailed from there the next day and arrived opposite Chios. The following day we crossed over to Samos, and the day after that, we came to Miletus.

Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus to avoid spending time in the province of Asia, because he was hurrying to be in Jerusalem, if possible, on the day of Pentecost.

From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the church.

When they came to him, he said to them: "You know how I lived the whole time I was with you, from the first day I set foot in Asia,

serving the Lord with all humility, with tears, and in the midst of the trials that came upon me through the plots of the Jews.

You know that I did not hold back anything that would be helpful to you but preached to you and taught you publicly and from house to house,

testifying to both Jews and Greeks about turning from their former ways toward God and placing their faith in our Lord Jesus.

And now, behold, I am going to Jerusalem, bound by the Spirit, not knowing what will happen to me there,

except that in every city, the Holy Spirit warns me that chains and hardship await me.

But I do not consider my life of any value to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the good news of God's grace.

Now I know that none of you, among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom, will ever see my face again.

Therefore, I testify to you today that I am innocent of the blood of all of you,

because I did not hold back from declaring to you the entire plan of God.

Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock over which the Holy Spirit has appointed you as overseers, to shepherd the church of God, which He purchased with His own blood.

I know that after my departure, savage wolves will come in among you, and they will not spare the flock.

Even from your own number, men will rise up and distort the truth to draw away the disciples after them.

Therefore, be alert. Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each one of you night and day with tears.

Now I entrust you to God and to the message of His grace, which is able to build you up and to give you an inheritance among all those who have been made holy.

I did not desire anyone's silver, gold, or clothing.

You yourselves know that these hands provided for my needs and for those who were with me.

In every way I have shown you that by working hard like this, we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, who Himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'"

After he said these things, he knelt down and prayed with all of them.

They all wept loudly as they embraced Paul and kissed him.

They were especially grieved by what he had said, that they would never see his face again. Then they accompanied him to the ship.
