Acts 1 (NMV)
I wrote the first account, Theophilus, about all that Jesus began to do and to teach
until the day He was taken up, after He had given instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles He had chosen.
After His suffering, He also presented Himself alive to them with convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.
While He was staying with them, He ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, "Which you heard Me speak about," He said.
"For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit in just a few days."
So when they had gathered together, they asked Him, "Lord, are You restoring the kingdom to Israel at this time?"
He said to them, "It is not for you to know the times or the seasons that the Father has set by His own authority.
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the farthest ends of the earth."
After He had said these things, as they were watching, He was lifted up, and a cloud took Him out of their sight.
As they were staring into the sky while He was going, suddenly two men in white robes stood beside them.
They said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you saw Him go into heaven."
Then they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away.
When they arrived, they went up to the upstairs room where they were staying. The ones present were Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James.
They all were continually united in prayer, along with the women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, and His brothers.
In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about 120 people) and said,
"Brothers and sisters, it was necessary that the Scripture be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit foretold through the mouth of David about Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.
For he was one of our number and shared in this ministry."
(Now this man acquired a field with the payment he received for his betrayal. He fell headfirst, his body burst open, and all his intestines spilled out.)
Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, "Field of Blood."
"For it is written in the Book of Psalms: 'Let his dwelling become deserted; let no one live in it,' and, 'Let someone else take his place of leadership.'
Therefore, from among the men who have accompanied us during the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
beginning from the baptism of John until the day He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection."
So they proposed two: Joseph called Barsabbas (who was also known as Justus), and Matthias.
Then they prayed, "Lord, You know everyone's heart. Show us which of these two You have chosen
to take the place in this apostolic ministry that Judas left to go to his own place."
Then they cast lots for them, and the lot fell to Matthias, and he was added to the eleven apostles.
