James 4 (NMV)

Chapters: 1 2 3 4 5

What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that wage war within you?

You desire and do not have, so you murder. You crave what others have and cannot obtain it, so you fight and wage war. You do not have because you do not ask.

And when you do ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, to spend it on your own pleasures.

You unfaithful people! Don't you know that friendship with the world means hostility toward God? Therefore, whoever chooses to be a friend of the world makes themselves an enemy of God.

Or do you think Scripture says in vain: "The Spirit that He caused to dwell in us longs jealously"?

But He gives greater grace. That is why Scripture says: "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."

Therefore, submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Grieve, mourn, and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.

Brothers and sisters, do not speak evil against one another. The one who speaks against a brother or judges them speaks against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.

There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and to destroy. So who are you to judge your neighbor?

Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go into this city, spend a year there, carry on business, and make a profit."

Yet you do not even know what tomorrow will bring, what is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

Instead, you should say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that."

But as it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil.

So then, if anyone knows the good they ought to do and doesn't do it, it is sin for them.
