Matthew 16 (NMV)
The Pharisees and Sadducees came to test Jesus, and they asked Him to show them a sign from heaven.
He answered them, "When evening comes, you say, 'It will be good weather, because the sky is red.'
And in the morning, 'Today there will be a storm, because the sky is red and overcast.' You know how to read the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.
An evil and unfaithful generation demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah." Then He left them and went away.
When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring bread.
Jesus said to them, "Watch out and be on guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."
They were discussing among themselves, "It's because we didn't bring any bread."
Aware of this, Jesus said, "You of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves that you have no bread?
Don't you understand yet? Don't you remember the five loaves for the five thousand and how many baskets you collected?
Or the seven loaves for the four thousand and how many baskets you collected?
Why is it that you don't understand that I wasn't talking to you about bread? But be on guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."
Then they understood that He was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"
They replied, "Some say John the Baptizer, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."
"But what about you?" He asked them. "Who do you say I am?"
Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."
Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father in heaven.
And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My community of believers, and the gates of the realm of the dead will not overpower it.
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you release on earth will be released in heaven."
Then He ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that He was the Messiah.
From that time on Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised on the third day.
Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him: "Never, Lord! This will never happen to You!"
But Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are a trap to Me because you are not thinking about the things of God, but about human concerns."
Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone wants to come after Me, they must deny themselves, deliberately take hold of their cross, and follow Me.
Whoever tries to hold on to their life will lose it, but whoever lets go of it for My sake will receive true life.
For what benefit is it if someone gains the whole world but forfeits their soul? Or what can a person give in exchange for their soul?
For the Son of Man is going to come with His angels in the glory of His Father, and then He will repay each person according to what they have done.
Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom."
