Matthew 27 (NMV)
When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put Him to death.
They tied Him up, led Him away, and handed Him over to Pilate, the Roman governor.
Then Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that Jesus had been condemned. He was filled with remorse and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders.
"I have sinned by betraying innocent blood," he said. "What is that to us?" they replied. "That's your responsibility."
So Judas threw the silver into the temple and left. Then he went out and hanged himself.
The chief priests picked up the coins and said, "It's not lawful to put them into the temple treasury, since they are blood money."
So they conferred together and used the money to buy the potter's field as a burial place for foreigners.
Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.
Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: "They took the thirty silver coins, the price set on Him by the people of Israel,
and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me."
Now Jesus stood before the governor. "Are You the King of the Jews?" the governor asked Him. Jesus answered, "You have said it."
While He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He did not answer.
Then Pilate said to Him, "Don't You hear how many things they are testifying against You?"
But He didn't answer him, not even to a single charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed.
Now during the festival the governor was accustomed to release to the crowd one prisoner, whomever they wanted.
At that time they had a notorious prisoner named Barabbas.
So when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, "Who do you want me to release to you, Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Christ?"
For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over.
While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message: "Don't have anything to do with that righteous man, because I have suffered greatly today in a dream because of Him."
But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.
The governor asked them again, "Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" "Barabbas!" they answered.
Pilate said to them, "Then what should I do with Jesus, who is called the Christ?" They all answered, "Crucify Him!"
He said, "Why? What has He done wrong?" But they shouted all the more, "Crucify Him!"
When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that a riot was starting instead, he took water, washed his hands in front of the crowd, and said, "I am innocent of this man's blood. It is your responsibility!"
All the people answered, "His blood be on us and on our children!"
Then he released Barabbas to them. But after having Jesus flogged, he handed Him over to be crucified.
Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the governor's headquarters and gathered the whole company of soldiers around Him.
They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.
They twisted together a crown of thorns, placed it on His head, and put a staff in His right hand. Then they knelt before Him and mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!"
They spat on Him, took the staff, and struck Him on the head again and again.
After they had mocked Him, they took off the robe and put His own clothes back on Him. Then they led Him away to crucify Him.
As they were going out, they found a man from Cyrene named Simon. They forced him to carry Jesus' cross.
When they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of the Skull),
they gave Him wine mixed with bitter gall to drink. But after tasting it, He refused to drink it.
After crucifying Him, they divided His clothes by casting lots.
Then they sat down and kept watch over Him there.
Above His head they placed the written charge against Him: "This is Jesus, the King of the Jews."
Two criminals were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left.
Those who passed by hurled insults at Him, shaking their heads
and saying, "You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross!"
In the same way, the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked Him:
"He saved others, but He can't save Himself! He's the King of Israel? Let Him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in Him.
He trusts in God, let God rescue Him now, if He wants Him. For He said, 'I am the Son of God.'"
Even the criminals who were crucified with Him also taunted Him in the same way.
From noon until three in the afternoon, darkness came over the whole land.
About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" that is, "My God, My God, why have You abandoned Me?"
When some of those standing there heard this, they said, "He's calling for Elijah."
Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a stick, and offered Him a drink.
But the rest said, "Leave Him alone! Let's see if Elijah comes to save Him."
But Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and gave up His spirit.
Suddenly, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split,
and tombs were opened, and many bodies of the holy ones who had died were raised.
After His resurrection, they came out of the tombs, entered the holy city, and appeared to many people.
When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they were terrified and said, "Truly this was the Son of God!"
Many women who had followed Jesus from Galilee and cared for His needs were there, watching from a distance.
Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee's sons.
When it was evening, a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, who had also become a disciple of Jesus,
went to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. Then Pilate ordered that it be given to him.
So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut into the rock. He rolled a large stone
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there across from the tomb, watching.
The next day, which is the day after Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate
and said, "Sir, we remember that while that deceiver was still alive, He said, 'After three days I will rise again.'
So give the order for the tomb to be secured until the third day. Otherwise, His disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people, 'He has been raised from the dead,' and the last deception will be worse than the first."
Pilate said to them, "Take a guard. Go and make it as secure as you know how."
So they went and secured the tomb by sealing the stone and setting the guard.
