Matthew 3 (NMV)
Now, in that time John the Baptist appeared publicly, preaching in the remote areas of Judaea,
and saying, "Turn from your former ways, because the kingdom of heaven is near."
For this is He who was spoken about by the prophet Isaiah, saying, "The voice of one shouting in the desolate areas, 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make His paths straight.'"
And John wore clothing made of camel's hair, and a leathern belt about his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.
Then people went to him from Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and the entire region around Jordan,
and they were baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.
But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, "You brood of poisonous snakes! Who warned you to flee from the coming judgement?
Then produce fruits deserving of a change of heart.
And don't presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.', for I tell you, God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones.
Even now the axe is positioned at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that does not produce good fruit is cut down, and thrown into the fire.
I baptize you with water for a change of heart, but He who comes after me is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire;
His winnowing fork, used to separate the wheat from the chaff, is in His hand, and He will thoroughly cleanse His threshing floor and gather His wheat into the storehouse; but He will burn the worthless chaff with unquenchable fire.
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan River to John, to be baptized by him.
But John tried to stop Him, saying, "I need to be baptized by You, and You come to me?"
And Jesus responding said to him, "Permit it now, for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed Him.
And when Jesus was baptized, He immediately came up out of the water and, behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending as though it were a dove and settling upon Him.
And behold, a voice came from heaven, saying, "This is My deeply loved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
