Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem, in the land of Judaea at the time of King Herod, look, wise men came from the east to Jerusalem,

saying, "Where is He that is born King of the Jews? Because we have seen His star in the east, and came to worship Him."

When King Herod heard this, he was deeply shaken, and all of Jerusalem was in turmoil with him.

So then he brought together all the chief priests and scribes of the people and carefully questioned them where Christ was to be born.

And they said to him, "In Bethlehem, of Judaea: for this is what has been written by the prophet:

And you Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, you are by no means the least among the rulers of Judah: for from you will come a ruler, who will shepard my people Israel."

Then Herod, having secretly called the wise men, carefully inquired the exact time the star had appeared.

And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the Child, and when you find Him, report to me, that I also may come and bow down before Him.

After they had heard the king, they departed; and, now, the star which they saw in the east, led them, until it came and stood over the place where the Child was.

When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.

And when they entered the house, they saw the Child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshipped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented Him with gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

And being warned in a dream by God not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by a different route.

After they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Wake up, take the Child and His mother, and flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you: for Herod intends to seek the Child to destroy Him.

So he got up, took the Child and His mother that night, and went to Egypt

And he remained there until Herod died: This happened to fulfill whst was spoken by the Lord by the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt I have called my Son."

When Herod saw that he was outwitted by the wise men, he became greatly enraged, and sent orders to kill all the male children that were in Bethlehem, and throughout its surrounding region, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had carefully inquired of the wise men.

Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying,

"In Ramah a voice was heard, like a funeral song, weeping, and great mourning, Rachel crying loudly for her children, and being refusing to be comforted, because they are no more."

But after Herod had died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

saying, "Wake up, and take the Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the Child's life are dead."

And he arose, and took the Child and His mother, and went to the land of Israel.

But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judaea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. However, being warned by God in a dream, he withdrew to the region of Galilee.

And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled: "He shall be called a Nazarene."
