Matthew 17 (NMV)
After six days, Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.
He was transformed before their eyes: His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as light.
Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him.
Then Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If You want, I will set up three shelters here: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."
While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him!"
When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground and were terrified.
But Jesus came and touched them and said, "Get up; do not be afraid."
When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus alone.
As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, "Do not tell anyone about the vision until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."
So the disciples asked Him, "Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"
He replied, "Elijah is indeed coming and will restore all things.
But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they didn't recognize him; on the contrary, they did whatever they wanted to him. In the same way, the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands."
Then the disciples understood that He was speaking to them about John the Baptizer.
When they reached the crowd, a man approached and knelt before Him.
"Lord," he said, "have mercy on my son, because he has seizures and suffers terribly. He often falls into the fire and often into the water.
I brought him to Your disciples, but they couldn't heal him."
Jesus replied, "You unbelieving and twisted generation! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him here to Me."
Then Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was healed from that hour.
Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why couldn't we drive it out?"
He told them, "Because of your little faith. For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."
[*This verse does not appear in the earliest manuscripts and is omitted in most modern translations. If included, it reads: "However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting."*]
As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus told them, "The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.
They will kill Him, and on the third day He will be raised up." And they were deeply distressed.
When they came to Capernaum, those who collected the temple tax came to Peter and said, "Doesn't your teacher pay the temple tax?"
"Yes," he said. When Peter entered the house, Jesus spoke to him first, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do earthly kings collect tolls or taxes? From their sons or from others?"
"From others," he said. "Then the sons are exempt," Jesus told him.
"But so that we don't offend them, go to the sea, cast a hook, and take the first fish you catch. When you open its mouth, you will find a coin. Take it and give it to them for Me and for you."
